Teacher Professional Development Programme

Teachers in professional development session

Project Overview

The Teacher Professional Development (TPD) Programme is T-TEL's flagship initiative, supporting the continuous professional development of teachers across 25 districts in Ghana. The programme aims to improve classroom practice, strengthen school-based coaching systems and build the capacity of district education offices to plan and deliver effective professional development for teachers.

Working in close partnership with the Ghana Education Service and the National Teaching Council, the TPD Programme has reached over 12,000 teachers to date. It operates through a cascade model — training district-level coaching co-ordinators who in turn support head teachers and classroom teachers through structured observation, feedback and reflection cycles.

The programme is designed to be institutionalised within Ghana's existing education structures, ensuring that the professional development culture and practices it introduces will outlast the programme itself.

Key Objectives

  • Improve the quality of teaching practice across participating districts through structured, evidence-based professional development.
  • Strengthen school-based coaching systems, equipping head teachers and senior teachers to provide effective peer support.
  • Build the capacity of district education offices to plan, deliver and monitor continuing professional development.
  • Generate evidence on effective CPD models in Ghana for dissemination and policy influence at national level.
  • Contribute to the development of a national CPD framework aligned with the National Teaching Council's professional standards.
